Arsenal are reportedly considering Manchester City coach Mikel Arteta.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester City coach Mikel Arteta is in the running to become Arsene Wenger’s replacement as Arsenal manager this summer.
The Gunners slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium, and the manner of their defeat has once again sparked questions over Wenger’s long-term future at the Emirates Stadium.
The 68-year-old is once again under pressure, especially as Arsenal are again set to miss out on a top four spot, and their only chance of silverware this season now lies with the Europa League after another disappointing campaign.
After 22 years at the helm, time may now be up for Wenger, and it’s claimed that City coach Arteta – along with Brendan Rodgers, Leonardo Jardim and Joachim Loew – is one of the frontrunners despite his lack of experience.
One last chance for Everton?
Arteta, 35, appears to be a highly-regarded understudy to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, and management in his own right beckons at some stage in his career on his current trajectory.
The former midfielder may now be lined up for a return to Arsenal having retired with the Gunners in 2016, but Everton have also been linked with bringing Arteta back to his former club.
The Mirror claimed in December that Everton chairman Bill Kenwright – who watched on as Arteta racked up 34 goals and 35 assists in 209 games for the Toffees – put forward Arteta’s name as a replacement for Ronald Koeman in November, before Sam Allardyce was appointed instead.
With Allardyce failing to impress and Arteta now in the running for a return to Arsenal, Kenwright may have one more chance to push for Arteta to make a return to Goodison Park this summer, in what would still be a gamble for the Toffees even with Allardyce’s struggles in 2018.
