According to El Desmarque, Arsenal are expected to make a move for Real Betis maestro Guido Rodríguez in a month.

The Spanish news outlet claim that the Gunners are insistent on signing the 10-cap Argentina international.

El Desmarque add that Real Betis are convinced an offer will arrive for their No.27, who is also wanted by Liverpool.

It was Estadio Deportivo who revealed that Jürgen Klopp’s side were keen on the South American, who now looks set to be approached by Arsenal.

El Desmarque add more information, revealing that Rodríguez has a release clause worth €80 million (£70 million).

That would come close to smashing both Arsenal and Liverpool’s club-record transfer fees.

Currently, the £72 million spent on Nicolas Pépé and the £75 million spent on Virgil van Dijk remain the Premier League duo’s biggest signings.

So, what type of player is the 27-year-old?

Well, firstly, don’t expect him to threaten the goal too often if he does arrive in the Premier League.

Rodríguez only has two goals in 33 appearances this season, and has also failed to record a single assist.

What the South American is good at, however, is breaking the play up and screening his backline from a defensive midfield position.

In our view, this would be a foolish move to make in the current climate.

COVID-19 has surely dented Arsenal and Liverpool’s finances, so it would be bizarre to spend £70 million on anyone, let alone a 27-year-old.

If the English giants do have those funds, they’d be better off saving their money and putting it towards a younger, long-term investment.
