According to Goal, Arsenal are now expected to accelerate talks with Ajax over the signing of André Onana.
What’s the story?
Well, we presume that Mikel Arteta and Edu were eagerly awaiting the verdict of Onana’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The 25-year-old was handed a one-year ban by UEFA in February after testing positive for Furosemide – a banned substance.
Sadly, the 18-cap Cameroon international isn’t currently allowed to partake in first-team duties with Ajax – he isn’t even allowed to train.
Onana pleaded his innocence, claiming that he accidentally took medication prescribed for his wife.
A hearing took place last week, and the CAS have now reduced his ban to nine months.
The verdict means Onana will be allowed to resume training with his teammates on September 3rd, and can resume playing matches from November 3rd onwards.
Goal now believe Arsenal will accelerate talks with Ajax after hearing the verdict.
Chances of Onana joining Arsenal?
In our view, it’s very likely.
Ajax are willing to sell in order to recoup some cash, as Onana will be available for free next summer when his contract expires.
According to Goal, Arsenal believe £7 million should be enough to tempt Ajax into selling their No.24.
Chris Wheatley – who works as Chief Arsenal Reporter for Football London – even tweeted from his personal Twitter account to say he believes it’s very likely that Arsenal sign the shot-stopper.
With bundles of Champions League experience under his belt, and plenty of time on his side to get even better, £7 million is a total steal.
If Arsenal pull this off, it would be a brilliant bit of business.
