Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo was reportedly on Arsenal’s radar before they appointed Unai Emery.
Nuno has proved to be an inspired addition to the Molineux side. Appointed in the wake of the hugely underwhelming season overseen by Walter Zenga and Paul Lambert, the Portuguese needed just one campaign to get Wolves promoted as they won the Championship title at a canter.
And it seems that his time with the second tier side did not go unnoticed by some of the Premier League heavyweights. The Daily Star reported that Nuno was the subject of an enquiry from Arsenal before the North London appointed Unai Emery this summer.
It is not clear whether how serious Arsenal’s interest became, but the Star adds that Nuno is now set to sign a new deal with the top flight newbies that is set to keep him at Molineux until 2021.
It will be a huge boost for Wolves if they manage to keep Nuno for a long-term spell. The West Midlands side may have shown some real ambition in the transfer market, but there still needed to be that key figure in the dug-out galvanising the team and making sure that the marquee signings complemented some of the core players who have been with the club for a few years.
Nuno did that superbly, and based on some of their business so far this summer and the fact that the manager is reportedly ready to sign a new deal, it would surprise few if Wolves had no intention of settling for 17th in their first season back at England’s top table.
