Gabriel had been expected to sign for Napoli this summer, but in a last minute twist Arsenal could apparently ‘steal’ the defender away from the Italian side.
Mikel Arteta’s men are known to be on the hunt for a new centre-back, and it seems that Gabriel is now firmly on their wishlist.
The report does not claim just how advanced Arsenal’s negotiations are, but it does suggest that the Gunners have now become the favourites to land the £25 million centre-back (Daily Express).
Gabriel actually had a medical at Everton earlier this summer, as reported by Di Marzio, but it seems that the Gunners are now a more likely destination for him.
If Gabriel was to move to Arsenal he could be an exciting addition to their squad.
The 22-year-old has been one of the stand-out defenders in Ligue 1 over the past campaign, where he has earned great credit for his performances.
Gabriel could well turn out to be Arsenal’s partner for William Saliba at the back, and if they were paired together at the Emirates, then Arteta could have two of the best defensive prospects in European football to work with.
