Arsenal are closing in on a €35m (£30m) deal for Real Madrid ace Martin Odegaard, claims David Ornstein for The Athletic.

What’s the story?

According to the journalist, the Norwegian is one step away from leaving Los Blancos.

The ace could even feature for the Gunners in the clash against Chelsea this weekend.

The deal is at an advanced stage with negotiations having been accelerated due to the willingness of all parties, according to AS.

Odegaard hasn’t trained with any of his teammates, but, has been working individually.

The move will be a permanent deal as opposed to a loan transfer like in January.

Arsenal have been on the search for a number 10 all summer long with the 22-year-old reportedly the number one target.

Odegaard doesn’t change much for Arsenal as deal grows close

Signing a number 10 was a priority this summer. In that regard, completing a deal for Odegaard is massive for Arsenal.

However, you get the feeling, the ace changes nothing from what we saw last Friday.

The Gunners were bullied by a Brentford side, who employed high press, high-intensity tactics. There were also multiple defensive errors.

Will the attacking midfielder make Arsenal better in playing the ball out of defence? Given the fact he’s an attacker, the answers now, because he’ll be far too high up to effect play.

Will the youngster help fix an error-strewn backline? Again, the answer is no.

Odegaard is a great signing, however, not one which changes the course of Arsenal’s season.
