According to AS, Arsenal and West Ham United target Unai Nunez has stalled on a third contract offer from Athletic Bilbao.

The former Spain U21 international’s future is in doubt ahead of the summer.

Arsenal and West Ham are keen, with the latter considering a January deal before Nunez made clear his intentions to remain at Athletic until the summer.

The central defender’s contract at the Basque club expires in 2023. His release clause of £25 million makes him vulnerable to a potential summer buyout.

Bilbao are trying to tie him down to a new deal, but club president Rafa Alkorta told El Correo in April how Nunez has already turned down two offers.

Now, Spanish editorial AS claim a third offer has yet to be answered while the club aren’t planning on offering the 23-year-old another deal.

It seems the defender is waiting until the summer to hear of any potential offers.

Arsenal must strengthen their defence this summer. The Gunners can’t rely on David Luiz and Sokratis in the long-term, while Rob Holding is inexperienced.

Mikel Arteta will want to see his side push for the Premier League’s top four next season. Nunez could be an ideal option, with the defender comfortable playing out from the back.

He made 20 appearances in all competitions prior to the Covid-19 suspension, averaging 1.3 interceptions and 4.3 clearances per La Liga encounter (Whoscored).

West Ham are also keen. The Hammers, however, may have trouble convincing Nunez with Champions League clubs Bayern Munich and Inter Milan also listed as suitors by AS.
