Jerome Boateng’s camp have been “stunned” by Bayern Munich’s decision to let him go, with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal circling the treble-winning centre-back, according to Sport1.

If FC Hollywood are planning for life without one of their bonafide A-listers, there are clubs around Europe that would happily hand a superstar defender one last chance on the big stage.

BILD reported on Thursday that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are interested in bringing former Manchester City man Boateng back to the Premier League.

Tottenham are watching closely too with Boateng exactly the kind of grizzled winner Jose Mourinho, who tried to sign the German at Manchester United, tends to hang his hat on.

The 33-year-old has been in fine form since Hansi Flick took over from Niko Kovac at the Allianz Arena in 2019.

But, according to reports, Bayern have already decided Boateng’s future lies elsewhere. The Champions League and eight-time Bundesliga winner won’t be handed the chance to extend a contract that expires in June.

Sport1 claims Boateng was planning to stay. For him and his advisers, Bayern’s decision is something of a nasty surprise as the 2014 World Cup winner was ready and willing to stay in Munich for another year or two.

It remains to be seen whether Boateng is keen to test himself in another major European league.

He does have an interest in moving across the Atlantic but surely a switch to the US will come too soon for a man who still has so much to offer at the top level.

Boateng earns £170,000k a week at Bayern – a sum that appears to put him beyond the reach of Bundesliga rivals.
