Report: Armstrong highly likely to leave on loan

Newcastle United’s Adam Armstrong could be set for another loan.

Newcastle United will take their time in deciding what to do with in-demand striker Adam Armstrong, reported The Chronicle.

The 19-year-old forward enhanced his reputation last season by netting 20 times for League One outfit Coventry City on a season-long loan.

With his parent club being relegated to the Championship, it’s been suggested that the England Under-19 international could be given chances to impress by Rafael Benitez next season.

However, his route to first-team football is now more treacherous after Benitez signed striker Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace in a move which might suggest that the Spaniard prefers to rely on tried-and-tested talent.

But The Chronicle have reported that no decision has been made on Armstrong, who has as much as a month in which to impress the former Liverpool manager.

However, the report goes on to claim that it’s “highly likely” for the youngster to be sent out on loan again next term.

If true, Benitez is probably right to send him on loan again. Newcastle are strongly expected to bounce straight back into the Premier League, but in order to do that they’ll need goals and lots of them.

Armstrong may have a future at Newcastle, but it would be a gamble for Benitez to list him as one of his strikers next season – and the stakes will be too high.
