According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United’s Lee Charnley will hold talks with Anthony Hudson over Skype today about replacing Rafael Benitez.

The news Newcastle fans have been fearing finally came today, as the Magpies confirmed that boss Benitez will be leaving the club when his contract expires next week.

Newcastle must now look to quickly find a replacement for Benitez given that the transfer window is entering full swing, and they don’t want to be left behind.

It’s now believed that Hudson is a leading contender, and will hold talks with managing director Charnley today, but their discussion will allegedly take place over Skype.

That makes Hudson a leading contender for the job if he’s the first one being spoken to, and that may not fill Newcastle fans with much confidence.

Hudson, 38, was a Tottenham reserve team coach under Harry Redknapp, and earned a strong reputation at White Hart Lane, with Redknapp particularly impressed.

As noted by BBC Sport, Redknapp compared Hudson to Jose Mourinho, and then recommended him to Newport County, where he became manager in 2011.

Head coach Anthony Hudson of the Colorado Rapids walks onto the pitch against Minnesota United at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on June 23, 2018 in Commerce City, Colorado.

That may be exciting, but he has since had spells in charge of Bahrain and New Zealand, and recently left his role as Colorado Rapids boss after just eight wins in 46 games.

With 28 defeats, Hudson was a disastrous appointment for the MLS side. Yes, there’s time for Hudson to learn and grow as a manager at such a young age, but a career win rate of 29% isn’t the calibre of boss Newcastle will have had in mind after Benitez’s exit.

It’s bad enough that Newcastle have lost Benitez, but if Charnley gets the next appointment wrong – or even one that worsens the relationship with fans – then a dire situation will somehow deteriorate even further.
