Newcastle United will be without Andy Carroll this weekend.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll is unlikely to be fit enough to face Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend.
The Magpies pounced on transfer deadline to sign Carroll, bringing him back to St James’ Park on a free transfer after his West Ham United contract ended.
The Sun claim that Carroll is earning less than a quarter of his £90,000-a-week West Ham salary with Newcastle, but can earn up to £70,000-a-week if he plays.
Newcastle have incentivised the deal for Carroll to play games, which has been a problem in recent years given his crippling injury problems.
It’s now claimed that Newcastle hoped to have Carroll fit to feature against Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend, but that’s now looking ‘extremely unlikely’.
The 30-year-old striker hasn’t completed a full training session with teammates yet, so he’s unlikely to be risked against his former club at Anfield.
Steve Bruce has praised Carroll’s progress of late, but it’s thought that this game will come too soon, with the trip to Leicester City later this month a more realistic target now.
With Joelinton the only true centre forward in the squad, Carroll’s return will be a welcome boost, and he’ll be looking to make up for lost time when he does come back to play for Newcastle after more than eight years away.
