QPR owner Tony Fernandes reportedly cancelled a deadline day deal for Ghanaian international Andre Ayew.
According to the Daily Mirror, Queens Park Rangers owner Tony Fernandes pulled the plug on a deadline day deal to sign Marseille forward Andre Ayew.
QPR had a quiet deadline day, which was unfamiliar territory for then-manager Harry Redknapp, who has always been active on the final day of transfer windows.
Just hours after being told by owner Fernandes that no more players would be signed, Redknapp resigned citing an impending knee operation as his reason for leaving Loftus Road.
Yet the Mirror report that Redknapp had a deal all lined up for Marseille’s Ayew – only for Fernandes to cancel the deal and leave Redknapp with little firepower in the final third.
The Ghanaian international, 25, is a highly sought-after player considering that he’s out of contract at the end of this season, meaning that he is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any club and join for free in the summer.
QPR’s decision to cancel that particular deal means that Ayew is still available for nothing, and Premier League rivals Tottenham have recently been linked with him.
Tutto Mercato Web suggested that Ayew, who can play out wide or up front, was a target for Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane in order to add another goalscorer to his team.
Ayew, the son of legendary Ghanaian footballer Abedi Pele, has racked up 53 goals and 19 assists in 181 games for Marseille, so it’s little wonder why he’s attracting so much interest.
And on a free transfer, he would be a bargain for anybody – but only because QPR owner Fernandes decided to pull out of a deal to bring him to West London.
