Report: Anderlecht make late bid for Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic

Newcastle United have reportedly received a bid from Anderlecht for striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Anderlecht have made a bid for Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic ahead of the final hours of the January transfer window.

It has been a hugely frustrating season for the Serbian. He has currently made just six Premier League appearances this term and is still awaiting his first start of the campaign in the top flight.

It is not clear what the Belgian side have offered in their attempts to re-sign the 23-year-old, but the Chronicle reports that Anderlecht have already seen a loan bid for the forward rejected this month.

The Chronicle adds that the Magpies will not be willing to let Mitrovic leave St James’ Park, despite his lack of game-time, unless they receive a bid of £15 million and have a replacement lined up – which is proving tricky with Daniel Sturridge heading to West Bromwich Albion and nothing coming of the links with Nicolai Jorgensen.

The Chronicle suggests that Rafa Benitez will use Mitrovic if he remains a Newcastle player after Wednesday’s deadline, but it surely makes a lot of sense to consider the bid that comes in if the Spaniard feels that he cannot rely on the striker and any departure helps Newcastle land a replacement during the final hours of the window.

Mitrovic arguably has the quality to make an impact for Newcastle, but if Benitez is less convinced that that is the case then letting him leave for the coming months – if Anderlecht’s latest bid is also a loan offer – may not be a terrible idea.
