West Bromwich Albion boss Sam Allardyce is hoping to make Josh Windass his first signing, with the Sheffield Wednesday ace potentially arriving for just £400,000 according to the Mirror (5 January, page 57).

Slaven Bilic’s successor might have been left frustrated by the impact of Brexit on his January plans, but at least a Hull-born 26-year-old will not fall foul of any new legislation.

What’s more, West Brom are hoping to snap up Windass on a bargain fee with the former Rangers forward due to become a free agent next year (Yorkshire Live).

The Mirror suggests that £400,000 might be all it takes to get West Brom’s first winter signing over the line.

Windass has never played in the Premier League and, having scored just six times in 29 Championship matches for Wednesday, there are doubts about whether he could make the step up for a side already battling against the drop.

West Brom’s squad is full of players who shone in the second tier but have found the step up difficult to manage.

Windass, an attacking midfielder who can also play up front, would undoubtedly arrive amid plenty of scrutiny.
