A report from the Chronicle has suggested that Aleksandar Mitrovic is keen to remain at Newcastle this summer amid speculation surrounding his future, but may still go into the next campaign playing for another club.

According to the Chronicle, Mitrovic has been linked with a move away following his inconsistent spell with the Magpies, but the forward wants to stay at St James’ Park despite his struggles.

And the Chronicle suggests that Rafa Benitez is currently open to the idea of keeping the 22-year-old amongst his squad ahead of their return to the Premier League, as he is a fan of the Serbia international and is hoping to help him become a success on Tyneside.

However, the Chronicle adds that there is a chance that Mitrovic could still move away on loan before the next season starts, but that is largely dependent on how successful Benitez is when it comes to landing his summer targets.

While Mitrovic may divide supporters and some may be hoping that he does move away during the coming months, he boasted a decent record when it came to the 11 Championship fixtures he started this past season, scoring four and contributing six assists.

And those who doubt that the forward can have a role to play at the highest level next season will be hoping that he makes the most of what appears to be a chance to impress and gives Benitez more hope that he can turn him into a genuine Premier League player.
