Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook and Aitor Karanka are both said to be interested in the Sunderland job.

Aitor Karanka, manager of Middlesbrough looks on during the Premier League match between Stoke City and Middlesbrough at Bet365 Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Stoke on Trent, England.

According to a report in the Northern Echo, both Aitor Karanka and Paul Cook are interested in the Sunderland job.

Sunderland are looking for a new manager, after parting company with Simon Grayson earlier this week.

The Black Cats could only manage a draw at home to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday evening, and that proved to be the end for Grayson.

With Sunderland in crisis and sitting in 23rd place in the Championship table, there was a fear over which managers they could attract to take on the job at the Stadium of Light.

Manager of Portsmouth Paul Cook looks on prior to the Sky Bet League Two match between Portsmouth and Cheltenham Town at Fratton Park on May 6, 2017 in Portsmouth, England.

However, it seems that the Sunderland job remains an attractive role for many.

Karanka and Cook are now said to be interested in taking over the Wearsiders, and helping to transform the club’s fortunes.

Karanka is currently out of work, having been dismissed by Middlesbrough, but he has experience of getting teams out of the Championship.

The Spaniard is said to want assurances that Sunderland will be able to provide him with stability to agreeing to the job role, but he is eager to listen to the North East side’s offer.

Cook, meanwhile, is at Wigan Athletic currently – but he is said to be willing to leave the League One club to make the step up.
