According to the Associated Press, the agent of New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long is now discussing a loan move to Liverpool.

The Reds lost Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to major injuries earlier this season, and the situation isn’t getting any better.

Joel Matip keeps getting injured, and even emergency centre back Fabinho is now out of action, meaning Liverpool are looking for a last-gasp centre back signing.

The likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Issa Diop have been suggested, but so has American international Long.

It’s now claimed that Long’s agent is in talks with Liverpool to try and thrash out a deadline-beating deal, potentially heading to Anfield on loan for the rest of the season.

This would be a huge opportunity for Long, and one that may never come around for him again given that he turns 29 later this year.

Long has had a long path to this point; he was with FC Tucson, Portland Timbers, Sacramento Republic, Orange County Blues, Seattle Sounders 2 and New York Red Bulls II before becomign a first-team player.

Long now has three goals in 18 America caps, and has become one of Major League Soccer’s top centre backs with the Red Bulls.

He wouldn’t be a particularly exciting addition, and a long-term move wouldn’t set pulses racing, but Long could provide help for Liverpool then they need it most.
