Southampton’s poor form has put Claude Puel on the chopping block.
Sheffield Wednesday Manager Carlos Carvalhal
According to The Independent, Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal could leave the club this summer if he doesn’t win promotion – and Southampton could be waiting in the wings.
Carvalhal, 51, was the surprise choice for the Wednesday job in 2015, having spent three years out of the game following his exit from Turkish club Istanbul BB in 2012.
A nomadic managerial career did little to convince Owls fans at the time of his appointment, but he has proven to be an inspired choice, having taken Wednesday to the Championship play-off final last season, only to lose out to Hull City.
Carvalhal has taken Wednesday into the play-offs again this season, and will take on Huddersfield Town over two legs for another shot at promotion to the Premier League.
Southampton manager Claude Puel
Should Wednesday miss out again, Carvalhal could be on his way out of Hillsborough, as The Independent report that he could be tempted by a move to the Premier League – but won’t hold even informal conversations with clubs during the play-offs.
It’s stated that Southampton considered Carvalhal as a replacement for Ronald Koeman last summer, and could make another move for the Portuguese boss this summer should they part ways with Claude Puel.

Tonight’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal means it’s now five games without a win and just two points from a possible 15 for the Saints, with Puel also under pressure amid rumours of arguments with certain players.
It’s unclear whether Southampton will choose to replace Puel, but the Saints – as well as Hull and Watford – are believed to be keeping an eye on Carvalhal’s situaton ahead of a possible summer move.
