According to a report from The London Evening Standard, Southampton are interested in signing Chelsea youngster Silko Thomas. The 18-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for Chelsea but has been impressing for their youth teams.

Thomas is a young left-footed attacker who prefers to play on the right wing.

Both Chelsea and Southampton have a good relationship, with the clubs having completed a deal for Tino Livramento and a loan move for Armando Broja in recent years. This could make a potential move for Thomas more likely to happen.

Thomas is considered an unknown quantity as he has yet to play a senior game, but Southampton have had success with these types of players in the past. Livramento made a huge impact for the Saints last season, while Romeo Lavia has been arguably their best player this year.

Say what you will about Southampton’s performances this term, their talent identification at that age has been spot on.

Recently, Thomas has reportedly had a trial with Sheffield United, but the Blades have now been placed under a transfer embargo, which could give Southampton a free run at the teenager.

It’s not clear at this stage if Chelsea would be willing to let Thomas go, but the fact that he has yet to play a senior game suggests that he’s not a player they’re desperate to keep hold of.

With Southampton’s track record of developing young players, it could be a good opportunity for Thomas to continue his progression, and who knows? Perhaps he could end up being another Livramento who Chelsea live to regret selling.

Keep an eye on this one as Southampton look to add yet another young star from one of the Premier League’s top clubs to their ranks.
