Former Real Madrid defender Marcelo is set to be have his contract terminated at Olympiacos, according to a report from Sport24.

Apparently, Marcelo has a proposal from another club on the table that will cover him both competitively and financially.

Marcelo was heavily linked with a move to Leeds United not too long ago, with reports suggesting that the Elland Road club were keen on signing him as he entered the final stretch of his career.

Leeds’ interest in Marcelo was understandable, as the Brazilian has been one of the best left-backs in Europe over the past decade. He won five Champions League titles and a number of La Liga titles during his time at Real Madrid, and was widely regarded as one of the best in the world in his position.

However, Marcelo’s age and declining form in recent years have been a cause for concern, hence why he ended up in Greece.

However, he’s now set to leave Olympiacos to join a team that will satisfy him competitively, and we can’t help but wonder if Leeds are in the race to sign him.

If Marcelo is made a free agent, Leeds would be able to revisit this deal, and with the Whites still struggling for any sort of depth at left-back, this could be a shrewd move.

Yes, he’s 34 years old, but as the likes of Thiago Silva and Willian have shown this season, an ageing star can still have a real impact in a Premier League team.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds will renew their interest in Marcelo, but given their struggles at left-back this season, they could certainly use some experienced cover.

Marcelo’s release from Olympiacos will undoubtedly attract the attention of other clubs, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up next. He still has a lot to offer as a player, and his experience and leadership qualities could be invaluable to a team looking for some defensive stability.

In all honesty, it’s unlikely that this is one for Leeds, but there’s an outside chance that Victor Orta could look at this one again.
