Neil Lennon kept his cards close to his chest when asked about Celtic’s reported interest in Omar Colley last week.

The Hoops are reported to have made a £7.6 million bid for the Sampdoria stalwart.

But Lennon said via The Record that he wasn’t aware of any offer being lodged by the Scottish Premiership champions.

If, however, Celtic are genuinely interested, then it looks like Colley could set them back a club-record amount.

As things stand, the £9 million shelled out for Odsonne Edouard two years ago is the most money the Hoops have ever spent on a single player.

But Calciomercato have reported that the Italian club’s CEO Massimo Ferrero does not expect the 6’3 defender to leave for less than £10 million, which obviously excedes the amount that was paid for Edouard.

Colley, who has 13 caps for Gambia, is clearly a talented player, because Serie A is a difficult division and the 27-year-old is proven in that league now. but this doesn’t make sense from Celtic’s perspective.

But Lennon has just brought in Shane Duffy on a season-long loan from Brighton, giving the Irish manager him, Kristoffer Ajer and Christopher Jullien in terms of centre-back options.

Do they need to break the bank on another central defender? In a word, no, and therefore there probably isn’t much in this.
