According to Calciomercato, Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has been put forward to AC Milan by Paolo Maldini – and manager Marco Giampaolo is now considering a move.

Schar, 27, only joined Newcastle last summer, as the Magpies cleverly swooped to activate a release clause after Deportivo La Coruna’s relegation from La Liga.

The Swiss international enjoyed a fine first season at St James’ Park, turning in superb displays for Rafael Benitez both defensively and even going forward having scored four times.

Now, it’s claimed that Milan legend Maldini and Ricky Massara believe that Schar is available for just €15million (£13.5million), and have put him forward to new manager Giampaolo, who is know considering a move.

Milan are in the market for a defender, and that move for Schar may be a bargain – but it would certainly go down badly at St James’ Park, with fans already angry enough.

They’ve just watched Rafael Benitez, Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez walk out, and selling a star defender like Schar for just £13.5million would be disastrous.

Championship defenders are being rated at higher prices than that, never mind a player coming off a fine Premier League season whilst possessing international and Champions League experience.

The price tag may well be wrong in the report, and you would have to hope so. That would be seriously devaluing Schar, which would only lead to more justified anger towards owner Mike Ashley.
