Italian outlet TMW claim that AC Milan are in talks to sign Arsenal midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga on a permanent basis after a disappointing first season at The Emirates – despite costing the Gunners a decent figure of £18million.

Lokonga, 22, was bought by the Gunners for nearly £20million from Belgian side Anderlecht last summer. It comes after clocking up 78 appearances for Anderlecht despite his tender age – but it is a move that has not worked out.

Indeed, the one-time Belgium international only managed 24 appearances for Arsenal last season. The Gunners are likely to still pursue a move for a holding midfielder. Lokonga was a very late sub against Crystal Palace on Friday.

Now, TMW say Milan are in talks to sign Lokonga, not just on a loan – but permanently. The Belgian contingent at Milan is growing after the addition of Charles De Ketelaere. The report also says that Arsenal are open to selling him.

Ultimately, it is a move that has not worked out for Lokonga. There is a player in there. But if he was unable to break into a midfield that included a constantly-injured Thomas Partey, and an inconsistent Granit Xhaka, then there is doubt.

He is a player with potential, but he needs to join a side where he is getting more-regular football. A side that suits his style more so. Perhaps, the slower style of Serie A football might suit him. He has a contract at Arsenal until 2026.

What kind of fee could Arsenal bring in? He cost £18m. While he struggled, he has added 25 games in all competitions to his CV in an Arsenal shirt. So, maybe if Milan table a fee similar to the one Arsenal paid, he will be jetting off for Italy.
