According to a report from the Daily Record, Aberdeen look set to beat Celtic in the race to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman – and that may prompt the Hoops to increase their bid for one of their other targets.

Woodman is one of the brightest goalkeeper prospects in England right now, having been a part of the Three Lions squad that won the under-20 World Cup last summer – with Woodman saving a penalty in the final.

With opportunities scarce at St James’ Park, and with Martin Dubravka reportedly closing in on a move to the Magpies – as reported by Sky Sports – it is no surprise that Rafa Benitez has sanctioned a loan exit for the 20-year-old, and it appears that the Scottish Premiership is set to be his destination.

The Record reports that Aberdeen and Celtic battled over Woodman, but it is Derek McInnes and the Dons that are on the verge of bagging the stopper’s signature, and that may prompt Celtic to step up their pursuit of Trevor Carson.

The Hoops have so far failed to bring Carson in from Motherwell, but the Record suggests that a fresh move may be on the cards with Woodman now looking Pittodrie-bound.

Aberdeen will be looking to close the gap at the top of the table on Wednesday night. They currently find themselves 14 points back of the Hoops, but will go back to second if they secure a positive result against Ross County.
