Report: £8m price could see Newcastle miss out on Nicolas Tagliafico

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a move for Nicolas Tagliafico, but the Magpies may not be able to afford the defender.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle have made an enquiry for Nicolas Tagliafico, but the Magpies fear that the Argentina international could cost too much for a deal to be done.

The Chronicle reports that the 25-year-old has been on Benitez’s radar for some time and the Newcastle boss is now looking to bring him in before the current window shuts as he looks for more competition for Paul Dummett.

However, the Chronicle adds that Newcastle also wish to sign a striker, number 10 and centre-back and thus, the £8 million fee that Ajax want for the left-back may take him out of their budget when agent demands are also factored in.

While he reportedly wants to strengthen in four positions before the deadline, Benitez must be extremely concerned that he may not have the resources to meet an £8 million asking price for an international defender who has more than 250 career appearances under his belt by the age of 25.

It is not clear how much his agent is likely to demand, but the asking price on its own appears to represent a potential bargain. Having to spend £8 million on a recently-established international hardly seems like the kind of prospect that would scare off many top flight sides.

It is, of course, possible that Newcastle could still decide to pay what they need to for Tagliafico, but it will undoubtedly frustrate the St James’ Park faithful and Benitez that a deal may well be beyond them right now.
