According to Bild, Jetro Willems is hoping that Newcastle make an attempt to sign him as his future at Eintracht Frankfurt remains bleak and unclear.
The German news outlet add that the 22-cap Netherlands international would also like an offer from England in general, but the Magpies are mentioned specifically.
Willems is currently back in training as he looks to resurrect his career, which stagnated following a cruciate ligament rupture suffered against Chelsea.
Eintracht Frankfurt – who paid €9 million (£8 million) for the former PSV Eindhoven man – are attempting to reduce costs.
The Bundesliga outfit have already offloaded Danny da Costa, Bas Dost, Dominik Kohr and Marijan Cavar, and Willems looks likely to be next.
Eintracht Frankfurt boss Adi Hütter would only have a 22-man squad if the Dutch left-back departs.
However, he doesn’t sound too phased by that.
Bild quote him as saying: “That’s enough. I don’t necessarily need a new one.”
If Willems does re-sign for the Magpies, then it may put a smile on Alan Shearer’s face at least.
The St James’ Park icon applauded the defender on Twitter for his display against Manchester City in a 2-2 draw back in November 2019.
Willems scored against Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions in that game, which was one of two goals he netted for Newcastle.
The other was a long-range screamer against Liverpool at Anfield.
His return would surely give the Magpies fans something to cheer about, amid a bleak time for the club.
