Leeds United are confident that they’ll be signing Mateo Joseph Fernandez in the January transfer window, according to The Daily Mail.
The summer transfer window has only been closed for a month and a bit.
But there’s no rest for the wicked and Leeds are already looking ahead to the winter window.
And The Mail reported on Thursday that the Elland Road club are increasingly confident in signing the 17-year-old, who turns 18 this month.
The report adds that United feel that they can get the Espanyol starlet for less than his £1.2 million release clause, with his contract expiring next summer.
The Mail also claim that Manchester City are trying to stop the player from joining Leeds and that Barcelona – who wanted him during the summer – are likely to be in the reckoning again.
La Grada in Spain reported earlier this week that the Whites could snap up the player for only £850,000, which tallies with what the English publication have claimed about getting him for less than his clause.
Considering he’ll only be 18 by the time January comes around, this more than likely isn’t a player going to be headed straight into Marcelo Bielsa’s senior squad.
It’s far more probable that Fernandez, if he joins, will become the latest teen hotshot in the Thorp Arch club’s Under-23 department.
