Marouane Fellaini’s move to China is what ended Celtic and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ hopes of signing one of his former teammates, according to The Daily Record.
Fellaini was sold by Manchester United to Shandong Luneng in February 2019, for a reported fee of £6.5 million.
It was around that time that Scott McTominay started to become a regular in the Red Devils’ side under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And it is claimed that had the Belgian failed to leave Old Trafford, McTominay could have spent the rest of that season at Celtic, Wolves or even Aberdeen.
Both Aberdeen and Celtic are said to have ‘shown their hand’, with Wolves lurking in the background.
And speaking earlier this year, McTominay admitted that he may have had a chance to move at that stage.
“About a year-and-a-half ago, there was a time when it might have been a possibility but then somebody else leaves or something like that,” he said, as quoted by The Daily Record.

Having only missed two of Manchester United’s 12 games this season, across all competitions, it is perhaps safe to describe the Scotland international as an established member of the side.
And a change of scenery for McTominay – at Celtic, Wolves or somewhere else – seems as far away as it has ever been.
