Arsenal defender Ben White could become a back-up player next season under manager Mikel Arteta, according to a report.

Football Transfers have reported that if Arsenal sign Joao Cancelo from Manchester City in the summer transfer window, then defender Ben White will become his back-up.

England international defender White is the first-choice right-back at Arsenal at the moment.

William Saliba and Gabriel are the two main centre-backs at the Gunners.

White is a centre-back by trade, but the former Leeds United loanee has been used at right-back this season.

According to Football Transfers, Arteta wants to start Cancelo at right-back.

White, who cost Arsenal £50 million in transfer fees (Sky Sports), would become the back-up at right-back to Cancelo and “first backup at centre back to William Saliba”.

Potential worry for Ben White at Arsenal

Now, this is worrying for Ben White in terms of his role at Arsenal.

White did brilliantly at centre-back last season, and the 25-year-old has excelled at right-back this campaign.

Now, Cancelo is one of the best full-backs in the world.

So, it would make sense for Arsenal manager Arteta to make the Portugal international an instant starting right-back if he joined the Gunners.

Saliba and Gabriel have done well at centre-back, and it would be worrying for White if he did not get regular playing time next season.
