Birmingham Live reporter Alex Dicken claims that Lille manager Paulo Fonseca is keen on a move to the Premier League amid rumours he is in the running for the Wolves job – just over a year after almost becoming Tottenham boss.

Fonseca, 49, is currently working in France with Ligue 1 side Lille. But last summer, the Portuguese gaffer was in the mix for the Tottenham job – which went to ex-Wolves gaffer Nuno Espirito Santo. Antonio Conte has since taken over.

Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport say Fonseca and Tottenham had an agreement for him to replace Ryan Mason. But nothing materialised. Having left Roma in 2021, he had to wait a full year before Lille appointed him as manager.

Now, Dicken reports on the Birmingham Live website that Fonseca is desperate to move to the Premier League. That is, despite signing a two-year deal at Lille. But sources also indicate he will ignore any rumours until an approach is made.

Fonseca keen on Premier League move amid Wolves rumours

Is Fonseca really the manager Wolves should be after? Well, given the Portuguese contingent at Tottenham, having someone of that nationality will obviously help. But it did not work with Lage, and it did not end well with Santo.

But he hardly stood out at Roma, though he did have his hands tied to a degree. Even then, he won 53 of his 102 games. At Lille, he has made a decent-enough start, securing four wins from nine. Is he good enough for Wolves?

The Midlands side need something exciting, a resurgence. On the surface, ex-Shakhtar boss Fonseca does not suggest something different. He is another pragmatic, Portuguese manager that would hardly change much at Molineux.

Plenty of managers are being linked with the Wolves job. There are surely better candidates out there to replace Lage than Fonseca, but he certainly has decent credentials and if Wolves want another Portuguese boss, he is the man.
