Manchester City defender John Stones is set to sign a new five-year contract with the club following an incredible season.

According to the Athletic, the Premier League champions will hand the 49-cap England international a bumper new deal which includes a staggering £250,000-a-week salary.

The new contract will make Stones one of City’s highest-paid players. The 27-year-old centre-back’s previous deal was due to expire next summer.

However, an astonishing year has seen Stones solidify himself as one of the Premier League’s top centre-backs. As well as a star player for England.

Alongside Ruben Dias, who according to Spotrac earns £115,000-a-week, the duo formed one of the best centre-back partnerships in the Premier League.

And Stones’ form didn’t just stop at club level. This summer saw the ex-Everton star form an incredible wall alongside Harry Maguire for England at the Euros. In seven games, the pair conceded just two goals, one of which was a set-piece.

It has been a remarkable turnaround for Stones who last year was potentially on his way out of the door at the Etihad.

But alongside Dias, the 27-year-old defender has found a partner which has seen the Barnsley-born player regain his imperious form in the Premier League.

And his wage increase will make Stones one of the best paid defenders in the division. As per the Athletic, the City star is now in the same wage bracket as the likes of Maguire and Liverpool star Virgin van Dijk.
