Atalanta defender Cristian Romero has agreed a five-year deal worth £45,000-a-week at Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur, as reported by Tuttomercatoweb.

You know how the saying goes: You wait all summer for one bus, etc, etc.

After months of inactivity, Spurs now appear to be on the verge of two new signings as the Fabio Paratici revolution gets underway.

Pierluigi Gollini, Atalanta’s former Aston Villa goalkeeper, expressed his delight about an impending return to England as he underwent the first part of his medical on Thursday.

Bryan Gil, meanwhile, will arrive from the citrus-soaked streets of Seville, Spurs having agreed a £22 million player-plus-cash deal for one of the most exciting talents in La Liga.

The high-earning, often underperforming Erik Lamela will go in the other direction.

A commanding central defender is next on Paratici’s hit-list.

And while Tottenham failed with an opening bid for a man named Serie A’s 2020/21 Defender of the Year in May, it would be a major surprise if Romero was not a Spurs player by the end of August.

Will Cristian Romero replace Alderweireld at Tottenham?

According to TMW, a man who shone on loan at Atalanta from Juventus last season has agreed a five-year deal worth £45,000-a-week at the London giants.

The beasts of Bergamo have already identified Romero’s replacement too, with Merit Demiral potentially set to follow in Romero’s footsteps by swapping Turin for Lombardy.

It is understood that Tottenham have now made a second offer for the Argentine international, forking over an initial £36 million. The transfer fee could rise to £43 million when bonuses are included.

Romero’s arrival should strengthen a defence beset by individual errors, while raising further questions about the future of veteran Toby Alderweireld.

According to The Athletic, Alderweireld has asked to leave after seven years at Spurs, with a return to Belgium in his sights.
