Newcastle United’s precarious Premier League position was always going to haunt them in the transfer market eventually.
And according to a report this afternoon, it has done now.
Newcastle have succeeded in convincing Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood to help them stay in the Premier League and win their relegation battle.
But the Magpies are linked to a lot more players and for some of them, well they aren’t up for a dogfight.
It was reported in midweek that Newcastle had been offered Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek [Manchester Evening News].
The Netherlands international joined the Red Devils in 2020 but has struggled horrendously to produce a positive impact at Old Trafford.
However, The Telegraph have claimed that the former Ajax maestro has rejected a loan transfer to St James’s Park.
The report adds that his decision was linked to Newcastle’s position in the Premier League table – 19th.
Blow
It’s certainly a blow for the Tyneside outfit but there’s plenty more fish in the sea.
And remember, Eddie Howe’s troops might’ve only won one Premier League outing this season, but they’re only two points adrift of safety.
In other words, escape is very much a possibility and the more Trippier and Wood settle into life in the North East, the better Newcastle will perform.
Silver lining
Truthfully, they might be better off without Van de Beek.
As talented as the Dutchman is, he hasn’t proven anywhere near good enough for English football as of yet and it’s very probable that he never will.
Newcastle need experienced, tough players who are proven in England’s top flight and, honestly, Van de Beek just doesn’t inspire confidence that he’d be a massive help, based on his career at the Theatre of Dreams thus far.
Manchester United spent quite a lofty £35 million on the fair-haired enigma.
