It looks as though Antonio Conte’s time at Tottenham Hotspur is coming to an end.
The Athletic claimed Spurs have compiled a shortlist of candidates to replace the Italian as their next head coach.
The feeling at Tottenham is that Conte’s departure from N17 is now “inevitable”, as per the report.
A follow-up article by The Athletic looked into what could prompt Daniel Levy to make the big decision.
In addition, it also looked at who could potentially be in charge between now and the end of the season.
On that front, the report claims it’s effectively down to two coaches – Conte and Ryan Mason.
Levy will need to decide who he reckons will be more likely to guide Spurs to fourth place in the Premier League.
Dressing-room harmony will also play a big part in this decision.
And as per the report, Levy will ‘likely be sounding out the thoughts of senior players such as Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris.’
No point sacking Conte now – our view
Kane, Dier and Lloris have all done well under Conte for the most part, and you’d like to think they’d vouch for Conte, at least until the end of the season.
As per the report, it’s not as though the dressing room is actively mutinous, and neither is the fanbase. Disappointed perhaps, but not actively calling for change.
After all, Conte is one of the best managers in the world. When you have the likes of Conte, Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino all failing to win at Tottenham, there’s one common denominator there.
There’s no point in Conte leaving now. After all, even if he were to leave in summer, and let’s assume he really wants out ASAP, getting into the top four would be a matter of personal pride for him (and if he has a top-four bonus, better for his bank account too).
