The Rangers target Bongani Zungu remains in contact with Steven Gerrard about a move to Ibrox, according to Kickoff.

The website claims Zungu ‘looked poised to join’ Rangers last month after he agreed a three-year contract, which contained a 12-month extension option.

It was later suggested that fitness concerns had brought to a halt his transfer.

But it was, in fact, Amiens’ €4 million asking price (around £3.7m) that prevented the deal from going ahead, according to Kickoff.

Zungu’s contract expires at the end of this season, allowing him to speak to overseas clubs about a free transfer move from January.

And Amiens – whose first-team the South African is currently training away from – are said to want to extend his deal and send him out on loan in a bid to keep his stock high, if their valuation is not met.

It is claimed that Zungu – who was relegated with the Unicorns last season – is set on a new challenge, with clubs in the Spanish and Italian top flights monitoring his situation, as well as Strasbourg and Rangers.

And a loan move is what the 27-year-old’s representatives are currently pushing for, as they seek to avoid his freeze-out continuing into the final months of his contract, according to Kickoff.

But it is said that Amiens will only sanction a temporary switch if he signs a new contract first.

Gerrard has made no secret of his desire to strengthen in Zungu’s position, although Rangers have been strongly linked with the Preston midfielder Daniel Johnson in recent days.
