Bongani Zungu is desperate to seal a £3.5 million move to Rangers and has even turned down the advances of La Liga outfit Celta Vigo, according to the Daily Record.

While Celta have fallen some way from their Europa League semi-final pomp of three years ago, the chance to share a pitch with Barcelona, Real Madrid and co must have appealed to a man relegated from Ligue 1 in May.

But the allure of Rangers should never be underestimated.

Not only are the Glasgow giants one of the most iconic and well-supported clubs in European football, they also appear to be on the rise again under Premier League-legend-turned coach Steven Gerrard.

Zungu, for what it is worth, has Liverpool-coloured crimson running through his veins.

And, as the Record points out, the chance to hone his talents under a bonafide Anfield great at Rangers is simply too good to turn down.

The Scottish Premiership runners-up have agreed a £3.5 million fee with Amiens, though they are not the only side to meet Zungu’s price-tag.

Celta too had a bid accepted for the 29-cap South Africa international.

But it seems that the ‘Gerrard factor’ has proved to be the difference, with Zungu opting for Glasgow over Galicia to fulfil the dream of sharing a dressing room with his boyhood idol.

A defensive midfielder by trade, the 27-year-old should add some steel at the base of Gerrard’s midfield. His ball-winning capabilities perhaps make him a more functional ‘number six’ than the play-making Steven Davis.
