Manchester United are reportedly weighing up the option to recall Amad Diallo from his loan spell at Sunderland, with Erik Ten Hag viewing the attacker as a potential option in the second half of the season.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Ivory Coast international has an option in his Sunderland loan contract that will allow United to recall the forward during the January window, with club insiders now thinking that such a clause could be activated in the winter market.

Diallo has enjoyed a decent loan spell with Sunderland since joining the Championship club in the summer on loan, with the 20-year-old bagging three goals and one assist in 13 appearances for the Black Cats, with the youngster one of numerous United youngsters spending the year in second-tier.

As per the report, Ethan Laird and Hannibal Mejbri are two players also developing quite well in the Championship this season who United also have the option of recalling in January if needed. However, it appears that Diallo is the favourite to return to Old Trafford.

Earning a reported £28,000-a-week, the report states that Ten Hag had identified United’s surplus of right-footed attackers to be an issue at the club, which could open the door for left-footed Diallo to return to Manchester and to make a significant impact with the Red Devils.

Indeed, given Ten Hag’s record of developing youth players, there’s every chance that Diallo could shine in Manchester if United were to recall him in January. However, for Sunderland, the decision will not be met warmly by supporters.

Diallo’s time at the Stadium of Light has been a slow burner, but the winger has finally established himself as a starter under Tony Mowbray, with the forward starting the last five Championship games in the lead-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup break. And United recalling the attacker now will be a kicker for the Black Cats.

Scoring and assisting against Birmingham City in the final match before the pause, Diallo is finally starting to hit his form with Sunderland five months after joining the club on loan. And United could be making a mistake if they decide to recall the youngster in January.
