According to Super Deporte, Real Madrid are considering a move for Serge Aurier, just weeks after he was released by Tottenham.

What’s the story?

Well, on the last day of August, Tottenham announced that they’d come to a mutual agreement with the 28-year-old to terminate his contract.

Nuno Espirito Santo has been using Japhet Tanganga in his place at right-back, while Emerson Royal also arrived in a £25.8m deal.

However, Aurier could soon leapfrog Spurs and move to the summit of football, with a dream move to Real Madrid a possibility.

Carlo Ancelotti currently has Dani Carvajal as his first choice, although the Spaniard is struggling with injuries this season.

Super Deporte add that Lucas Vazquez has been unconvincing in the role, while Álvaro Odriozola was loaned to Fiorentina.

As a result, the free agent market is being examined, where Aurier currently resides.

Should Tottenham have kept Serge Aurier?

Just because Real Madrid – of all teams – are circling around Aurier doesn’t mean Tottenham were wrong to offload him.

The Ivorian was a total liability at times, and while Emerson Royal hasn’t had the greatest start, he is certainly an upgrade.

Furthermore, it’s hardly as if Real Madrid have pounced on him as soon as he left Tottenham.

The Spanish giants sound quite desperate in their hunt for a backup right-back, and Aurier is merely an option for the short-term.

Any Tottenham fan will tell you that he isn’t anywhere near good enough to play for Real Madrid.

However, you can understand why they view him as a decent stopgap – he has Champions League experience, and would be very cheap.

Hopefully – if he does move there – Aurier doesn’t shine, or else people will start to question Tottenham’s decision.
