Memphis Depay continues to block Lyon’s attempts to extend his contract amid speculation that a return to the Premier League is on the cards for the Arsenal and Everton target, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
If one of the biggest clubs in French football were hoping to tie their wing wizard down to a new long-term contract, they really couldn’t afford to miss out on European qualification.
But much to the chagrin of president Jean-Michel Aulas (who has barely missed an opportunity to point fingers and express his fury), Lyon will be without continental football for the first time since 1997 after the Ligue 1 campaign was curtailed in April.
Lyon were consigned to a seventh place finish on a points per game basis and, as a result, Depay appears to have one foot and a few more toes out of the door.
The Dutchman’s current contract expires in 2021.
And, according to TMW, Depay has so far batted away Lyon’s attempts to agree fresh terms with his future more uncertain than ever.
This comes amid claims from Calciomercato that Everton want to bring a Ronald Koeman favourite to Goodison Park.
The Toffees lacked any sort of an attacking spark during insipid performances against Wolves, Tottenham and Southampton but Depay, after scoring 14 goals in 18 appearances in 2019/20, feels like exactly the kind of enigmatic, explosive talent who would take the Merseysiders to the next level.
Arsenal are also interested, according to Le10 Sport, with Lyon expected to demand £27 million for the one-time Manchester United flop.
