Despite his heroics earlier in midweek, Steven Bergwijn could still leave Tottenham Hotspur in January.
The Netherlands international scored two stoppage-time goals to give Tottenham a stunning 3-2 victory at Leicester City on Wednesday night.
However, speculation was already gathering momentum prior to that and according to The Athletic, the situation might not have changed too radically in spite of his double at the King Power Stadium.
The Athletic write that the Dutch winger’s overall aspiration is regular football and that a transfer to Ajax – who had an offer rejected by Spurs for £15 million – could ‘still appeal’ to the player if his first-team prospects don’t improve under Antonio Conte.
The report has added that Bergwijn was one of the saddest Lilywhites players to see Nuno Espirito Santo sacked.
The former PSV Eindhoven attacker was arguably Spurs’ most consistent performer earlier in the campaign, with Nuno instilling a newfound belief within him.
Departure likely?
Well the Eredivisie outfit still have to cough up the £20 million that chairman Daniel Levy wants for Bergwijn – and that was the price before his cameo at Leicester in midweek.
Now, the asking price might be higher and The Athletic claim that Ajax are waiting to see how he fares against Chelsea this weekend before deciding anything else.
Bergwijn joined Tottenham in a £27 million deal under Jose Mourinho two years ago but consistency and confidence problems have led to him becoming a periphery figure.
And honestly, it’s difficult to see that changing too much under the Italian manager, irrespective of his double.
The truth is, Bergwijn isn’t going to be a regular fixture in Conte’s starting lineup and therefore, he should consider a departure.
