German outlet Fussball Transfers claim Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kerem Demirbay rejected a move to sign Newcastle in the January window. The Germany international has been a mainstay for Leverkusen.

The 28-year-old joined Leverkusen from Hoffenheim for a fee of £27million (BuliNews) less than three years ago – but has already surpassed 100 appearances. He has had a hand in 33 goals during his 103 games for Bayer.

Newcastle, instead, have bought Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon. That is, after Demirbay chose to reject an approach from the Toon – who were linked with hundreds of players in the window. He wants to stay until the summer.

Newcastle do have quality in the middle – the likes of Sean Longstaff, Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock will compete with Bruno for a midfield slot. Jeff Hendrick has left. Isaac Hayden has not been included in the 25-man squad.

Demirbay rejects Newcastle: Summer move a possibility?

There is no doubt that Demirbay’s ability as a deep-lying playmaker would improve Newcastle. He can score goals, create goals but also dictate the style of play. He is also combative when he needs to be.

In his 103 games, he has 15 yellow cards and two reds and while that is hardly a positive – it does show he is willing to put a tackle in. Alongside a more defensive option, such as Bruno or Shelvey, he would be ideal.

The only issue, is that Bayer’s no.10 turns 29 in July. He would hardly be a long-term signing but could cost north of the £27million Leverkusen paid. Hoffenheim sporting director Alex Rosen said he was “exceptional” in 2018.
