Max Clark has been put up for sale by Vitesse Arnhem but, according to De Gelderlander, a move to Premier League outfit Crystal Palace was never likely to happen.
Suddenly, a previously problematic left-back spot is looking like a position of considerable strength at Selhurst Park.
A few months ago Patrick van Aanholt was the only senior left-sided defender in Roy Hodgson’s squad.
But the Dutchman’s spell on the sidelines has coincided with the rapid rise of academy graduate Tyrick Mitchell. Meanwhile, the once-forgotten Jairo Riedewald appears to have finally won over the Palace boss following a series of eye-catching performances.
Perhaps that’s why Crystal Palace never stepped up their apparent interest in Clark, a former Hull City youngster.
The Daily Mail reported a fortnight ago the Londoners were watching Clark closely. But De Gelderlander has played down those reports, suggesting the 24-year-old was never on his way back to England.
That doesn’t mean Clark will still be a Vitesse player this time tomorrow, however.
The Dutch transfer window doesn’t shut until Tuesday night and, with just one year remaining on his contract, Vitesse hope to sell one of their star players before his deal runs out.
Clark has yet to make a single Eredivisie appearance so far this season due to uncertainty surrounding his future.
