Timo Werner has rejected the advances of Bayern Munich as he looks to secure a dream transfer from RB Leipzig to Liverpool this summer, according to BleacherReport.
If it wasn’t for the global health crisis which turned the entire footballing world upside down, this Germany international would probably be packing his bags for Anfield already.
With a £53 million release clause in his contract, Werner would be seen as a bargain signing almost any other year. But with funds tight even at Anfield, there remains a nagging feeling that one of the hottest forwards in the game will have to wait to secure a life-changing move to the six-time European champions.
As BR points out, Werner has rejected the chance to swap Leipzig for Bundesliga leaders, and 29-time winners, Bayern. He is desperate to play under the most charismatic of coaches, a Mr Jurgen Norbert Klopp, and has even shunned a move to the Allianz Arena in the hope that the club from Anfield will make their move.
But patience, as the old cliché goes, may be a virtue here.
Liverpool are expected to keep the purse strings tight over the comings months with BR claiming that the Reds are unlikely to meet Werner’s £53 million release clause. His price-tag will drop to around £30 million this time next year, however – so do not be surprised if Liverpool put this one on the backburner for 12 months or so.
Werner has 30 goals in all competitions this season and hit a hat-trick in Leipzig’s 5-0 thrashing of Mainz last week.
