Steven Bergwijn has reportedly decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur following speculation about a return to his homeland, the Netherlands.
The Tottenham attacker hasn’t enjoyed a blistering beginning to life under Antonio Conte – who replaced Nuno Espirito Santo – with the Lilywhites.
The Amsterdam-born winger has managed a paltry 13 minutes of Premier League football for Spurs since Conte became manager in North London in November.
Speculation is rife that Ajax – among others – are interested in signing the 24-year-old.
And journalist Mike Verweij, speaking to the De Telegraaf podcast, has revealed that the out-of-favour Tottenham player is up for signing for the Dutch giants.
He said: “The interest has been known to Bergwijn’s management for weeks. Bergwijn has indicated that he really likes Ajax and then you will have to go to Spurs.”
On the rocks
Honestly, this is a very believable story. That’s because on Friday, ESPN reported that Bergwijn and the new Tottenham boss have a ‘strained’ relationship already.
And if that’s the case, which seems to be accurate based on the Dutchman’s lack of minutes under the former Chelsea and Juventus trainer, then a departure makes sense for all parties.
Really, Tottenham can do better than Bergwijn anyway.
Four goals and five assists in 42 Premier League outings hardly indicate that he’s a massive player for the Lilywhites.
Jose Mourinho brought him to North London, but Nuno struggled to get much out of him consistently and it would appear as if Conte isn’t even going to try.
If the relationship is genuinely on the rocks, the only solution is for all parties to severe ties because let’s face it, Bergwijn isn’t going to suddenly become a massive player in England.
