According to Fernando Mendes on CMTV, Matheus Nunes will be joining Everton this summer, putting an end to a lengthy saga.
What’s the story?
Well, this one’s been going on for a while.
When it looked like Nuno Espirito Santo would be arriving at Goodison Park to replace Carlo Ancelotti, the deal looked on.
However, when Rafa Benitez was announced instead, it was said that the Spaniard had other plans.
Then, the ex-Liverpool boss supposedly performed a U-turn on Nunes, after having a closer look at the 22-year-old.
Now, Mendes has claimed on CMTV that the South American will be heading to Merseyside after all, following Benitez’s change of heart.
Good signing for Everton?
In our view, we’re not too sure we would’ve signed another central midfielder if we were in Benitez’s shoes.
Another forward is definitely needed, as Everton’s depth behind Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks fairly thin.
A new right-back to act as Seamus Coleman’s long-term heir also wouldn’t go amiss.
In Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes, Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Tom Davies, Benitez has enough options in the centre of midfield.
Nunes looks a fine player, don’t get us wrong.
However, with finances hit by COVID-19, the Toffees shouldn’t be wasting money on areas that are not in need of investment.
