It has been reported that Matt Smith could be allowed to leave Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old is considered as the Gunners’ most talented young players, with the official website branding him as a “technically gifted central midfielder with an impressive passing range.”
However, it seems like Arsenal would be happy to let Matt Smith go, despite how much potential he possesses.
Matt Smith could be set for summer Arsenal exit
Considering the highly-rated midfielder has often featured in friendlies, many have felt it was only a matter of time until he became an established first-team player.
In fact, Football Fan Cast went as far as to dub the Englishman as ‘[Jack] Wilshere 2.0’, which goes to show just how naturally gifted he is.
However, Arsenal youth expert Jeorge Bird has claimed that Matt Smith seems likely to leave the club ahead of next season.

“It seems likely that Matt Smith will depart permanently this summer. The midfielder has frequently impressed at U21 level and has gained experience on loan but he hasn’t managed to break into the first-team squad at Arsenal”, Bird reported.
HITC View: High-time Smith leaves the Gunners
As promising a talent as Matt Smith is, at 22 years old, for him not to even make the matchday squad on a regular basis is a red flag.
Of course, that is easier said than done, considering Mikel Arteta’s side are the second-best team in the country.
But football is a short career which makes time of the essence for young players, who must be playing regular football at such an age.
Despite going on loan thrice and gaining experience, Matt Smith has seemed no closer to even being an option in midfield for the Arsenal first-team.
With the silky technician’s hopes of becoming a starter at Arsenal one day fading away, it may be best for his career to say goodbye once and for all.
