Dion Sanderson is considering a permanent move away from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer with Sunderland keen to keep the on-loan defender, as reported by the Mail.

A new manager, a new owner and a new sense of belief; a lot has changed on Wearside since Sanderson arrived back in October.

After struggling for regular game-time during his first few weeks at the Stadium of Light, the versatile 21-year-old has blossomed into a key player since Lee Johnson replaced Phil Parkinson in the hottest of hot-seats.

A right-back by trade, Sanderson has performed admirably at the heart of Sunderland’s injury-hit backline in recent weeks, his commanding and confident displays earning comparisons with another former Black Cats loanee.

“Dion Sanderson has a huge future in the game. Best on loan player I’ve seen at the club since Jonny Evans. Wise beyond his years on the pitch,” ex-Sunderland striker Stephen Elliott said on Twitter after Saturday’s 3-0 thrashing of Burton Albion.

If Sanderson goes on to emulate the achievements of the Leicester City stalwart in England’s top flight, Wolves may end up wishing that they had given the Midlands-born youngster more of a chance at Molineux.

The Mail reports that Sanderson, who is due to become a free agent in 2022, is open to bringing an end to his Wolves career in the summer transfer window.

He wants to play week in, week out and Sunderland, who would surely love to agree a permanent deal with the stand-in centre-back, will be able to offer him exactly that.
