Leeds United targets Gonzalo Montiel and Lucas Martinez Quarta are locked in battle to leave River Plate, according to El Intransigente.

Bleacher Report suggested that Leeds were interested in Montiel recently, while TyC Sports claimed last month that Leeds wanted Martinez Quarta.

But it seems that Leeds will only be able to land one this summer.

River Plate’s financial problems aren’t as severe as first feared, which means that the Argentine club only want to sell one of their key players to raise funds.

That could complicate matters for Leeds, who may no longer be able to pull off a double deal.

It seems that Martinez Quarta, who has a £20 million release clause (TyC), and Montiel are both eager to leave River though, with their agents now trying to force through a quick deal.

There is a realisation that if the other player is sold first, then the other could be kept in Argentina for another season, so both defenders are trying to get their exits sorted quickly.

If Martinez Quarta was to move to Leeds he would increase Marcelo Bielsa’s options at centre-back considerably.

Leeds are struggling to agree a deal for Ben White, and Martinez Quarta seems to be an alternative option.

Montiel, meanwhile, is a right-back and he could push Luke Ayling hard for his place in Leeds’ starting line-up.
