According to BILD, Jérôme Boateng is at the top of Tottenham’s wishlist this season, as he gets set to leave Bayern Munich.
The 32-year-old will become a free agent soon, as his contract with the Bundesliga giants comes to an end.
BILD claim that he has been linked with a move to AS Monaco, where his former coach Niko Kovac currently works.
However, as BILD state, Kovac didn’t use Boateng much at the Allianz Arena, so perhaps that move won’t materialise.
The 76-cap Germany international is asking for a three-year contract, which is a big commitment for clubs to take on given his age.
BILD also state that he will have to be prepared to accept a lower salary than the €12 million-a-year (£198,000-a-week) wages he currently earns.
You can see why Boateng earns such a huge salary.
The centre-back is a World Cup winner, who has nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League crowns to his name.
Boateng is one of the most decorated defenders around, and at one point, was arguably the best centre-back in Europe.
However, we think Tottenham should avoid bringing him to north London.
Why? Well, he’s not exactly a long term option at 32, and will surely command huge wages – even if he agrees to a reduction.
If he arrives and doesn’t offer much improvement on what Toby Alderweireld, Joe Rodon, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are providing, then it will be a tremendous waste of time.
What Daniel Levy should do is scour Europe for a younger option, who can hold down the fort for many years like Jan Vertonghen did.
