M’baye Niang could be set for a money-spinning move to Qatar with Tottenham Hotspur up against it as they look to bring the Rennes striker back to England, according to L’Equipe.

It is no secret that Jose Mourinho wants attacking additions this summer, with Spurs’ lack of depth brutally exposed by Harry Kane’s injury problems.

But finding a man capable of providing competition for the England captain in north London could be easier said than done.

A whole host of talented forwards have slipped through the net over the last 12 months, from Artem Dzyuba to Paulo Dybala, Ze Luis to Islam Slimani.

And it seems that a deal for Niang, the £18 million Senegal international who has been linked via L’Equipe, might have hit the buffers.

Reports from France are now claiming that the former AC Milan wonderkid could be heading to the Middle East instead. An unnamed Qatari outfit have held talks as rumours surrounding a move to Asia go from nought to 100 in the blinking of an eye.

So Niang has a decision to make.

At the age of 25, he is at the peak of his powers with the former Watford loanee finally starting to find the net at a regular basis on the other side of the Channel.

After a career-best, 15-goal season at Rennes, he will never have a better chance to establish himself at one of the top clubs of European football.

But with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy likely to keep the purse strings drawn tight, could Niang follow his bank balance rather than his heart?
